Radio Structures BM 30T
I was looking for a tower to replace the 40ft guyed lattice tower already in service at my qth. One of the main objectives of this installation was to achive a height of 1 wavelength or greater on the 20 meter band. The ability to lower the antennas (and the tower) to a safe height in the onslaught of a storm and the conveniece of been able to install/maintain antennas from ground level was also high on the priority list. Like many others on this side of the Atlantic the first words that tend to come to mind with this type of criteria are VERSA TOWER or WESTOWER. I eventually stumbled upon a company in Northamptonshire UK called Radio Structures they manufacture and supply radio masts, towers, antennas, and accessories.
The Theory of design and operation of these towers is similiar from one manufacturer to another all in the category of Crank up / Tilt over Lattice masts. In the case of the Radio Structures BM 30 T the following information can be found in the product description. BM30T Wind-Up Tiltover Lattice Mast = 30 Metres in Height, Are all made at the plant in Northampton. Ideal for many applications such as CCTV camera masts, Radio Hams, Wind Instrumentation Data Collection, Antenna Mast, HF antenna Mast, Flood Lighting Mast, etc. Hot Dipped Galvanised after Fabrication to BS EN ISO 1461 Mast comes complete with:-Five Lattice Mast Sections, High Tensile foundation holding down bolts & Template, Auto Brake Winch, Luffing Gear, Stainless Steel Luffing Wire Ropes, Top Cap with provison for 50mm OD tube, Standard 3 metre 1.29/32" Stub. |
For further information on crank up lattice towers I highly recommend the web pages of Chris Tran GM3WOJ ZL1CT. His web site describes how to install, maintain and use a typical base mounted telescopic lattice mast with special attention to the Versatower BP60. It is a MUST for anyone considering the purchase/installation of a crank up mast. Many thanks to Chris for his permission to link to his excellent resource http://www.qsl.net/gm3woj/latticetower.htm

* IMPORTANT NOTICE*
Crank up and tilt over type towers have many advantages for the radio amateur however due to the nature of their workings they need to be maintained to a very high standard. All aspects of their operation and structural integrity should be inspected throughly at regular intervals. THIS IS A BASIC REQUIREMENT. Failure to do so can result in serious injury, death or damage to property.
